Prematurity Position Paper
In late 2022 Dr Alison Gray and Dr Patricia Champion, on behalf of the Champion Foundation Trust, published a paper on the effects prematurity has on our babies and children. Around 7% of children born in Aotearoa New Zealand are born premature. Research from multiple sources summarised in this paper strongly suggests, that the effects of prematurity may have lifelong impacts for those born early and their families. Below is a copy of this paper.

Impact Lab Report & Event
On the 15th September 2022 the Champion Foundation Trust launched the Impact Lab Report at an event held at the Christchurch Club. Maria and Sir Bill English from Impact Lab shared their in-depth research into the social impact of the Champion Centre. Their report showed that few charities or services in New Zealand can compete with the effectiveness and level of service delivery that the Champion Centre prides itself on.
Other incredible speakers at the event included Champion Centre alumni Bella Lammers, who shared the story of her exciting life, highlighting what good early intervention can lead to, and Georgia Heard who eloquently spoke of her experience at the Champion Centre with her son who has recently moved on to school. Coen Lammers did a wonderful job as MC and Dr Patricia Champion shared some of the foundations of the Champion Centre model. Celia Barker, Chair of the Champion Foundation Trust, rounded off the evening.
We wish to thank all speakers and supporters for a wonderful evening. Below is a power point presentation of the Impact Lab Report along with videos on each of the speakers from the evening.

Research First Report
An analysis of the literature (internal and external), results of an online survey with 75 parents (current and past service users), and interviews with staff and parents clearly portrays the Champion Centre as a model service provider of early intervention. The Champion Centre has a stellar reputation both outside New Zealand (Blackburn, 2015) and at home (MOE, 2015; ERO, 2014; and CYF, 2013). A growing body of evidence from the Champion Centre’s own research shows the children attending the Champion Centre make important developmental gains year on year and most children graduate into mainstream school. Parents of children who attend the Champion Centre (past and present) give the service an extremely high rating. Nearly all parents who responded to the online survey said the Champion Centre makes a positive contribution to their children’s lives (96%). Moreover, 100% of parents agree the Champion Centre does everything it can for their children.
