The Champion Foundation Trust
The Champion Foundation Trust began with a generous pledge from Dr Nick Brown, in memory of his late wife Jan to honour the memory of their late son George, who attended the Champion Centre in the early years.
The Champion Centre provides multi-disciplinary, early intervention services to infants and young children aged up to 6 years, with significant developmental delays and disabilities and their families in Canterbury. The programme is offered as a centre-based model of service, where children and parents/caregivers come together to work with highly trained professionals.
The Centre has provided pivotal support to nearly 2000 children and their families since the late 1970's. The Centre is recognised as providing integral support and world leading in its research and practices (see Research First Report, January 2016). As the Centre is not fully funded by the government, the purpose of the Champion Foundation Trust is to build up a capital fund to generate investment income to secure a sustainable future for the Champion Centre.
The Trust has organised a variety of well supported, successful fundraising events over the last few years to generate funds, such as a Gala Dinner, Art in the Attic auctions, golf days and cocktail functions. The Trust has engaged in a social enterprise, having published a children’s story book, Earlybird. This illustrated children’s book explores the journey of premature birth. This story was developed by Dr. Patricia Champion. All book sale proceeds go directly to the Champion Centre.
